Abstract. Recent findings in the agricultural area of Raya-Raya (Quebrada de Humahuaca, northwestern Argentina) allow us to begin to understand Formative Period (600 B.C.–1000 A.D.) occupations of the south-central section of the Quebrada. The analysis of Raya-Raya reveals the presence of Formative Period dwellings. There is also evidence of San Francisco ceramics, from the eastern lowlands, in this area and in the nearby Pucara de Volcán. These findings allow us to discuss how the landscape was built by these early populations from the encounter between two different traditions in the same space.
Keywords: Quebrada de Humahuaca, South-Central area, Formative Period, San Francisco pottery, Landscape building.
