Abstract
The chemical and mineralogical characterization of rock paintings of the Agreste and Geometric traditions of the Descoberta and Saco do Cipó archaeological sites, Piauí, Brazil was performed by the archaeometrical techniques: (i) benchtop and portable X-ray fluorescence (FRX) by energy dispersion, and (ii) Raman spectroscopy. The results show large amounts of silicon, aluminum, phosphorus, sulfur, potassium, calcium and iron. Rock paintings of different shades of color were prepared with hematite-rich materials (α-Fe2O3). Raman spectroscopy allowed the identification of hematite iron oxide and anatase titanium oxide (TiO2), as well as many quartz crystals (SiO2). The similarities in the chemical-mineralogical composition of the rock paintings on both traditions indicate that they have the same elemental composition and that raw materials from the same source area were probably used in their processing.
